Internships – Your Key to a Future Career
Ever wondered why on earth your friends are working away over the summer in an unpaid internship while you are enjoying the freedom of no schedule, sleeping in and lounging poolside during the summer?
Internships are becoming increasingly important to starting a career.
There are two major benefits to being an intern:
- Contacts
- Experience
The contacts you make during an internship are the most important you will ever make. Networking is the number one way that people find a job. To network, you need people in your network to connect with — and who better to hook you up after graduation than someone who knows what an excellent worker you are and works in your industry.
The experience you gain during an internship is so valuable. It gives you experience to put on your resume. Employers always prefer someone with industry experience versus someone without experience.
Finding an Internship
First, get in touch with the HR departments of the companies you really want to work for someday. Let them know that your dream is to work for them when you are done school. Second, check out company websites as many have listings for internships. Third, talk with your professors at school to see if they have they have any contacts for possible internships.
